What happened
According to a notice Southfield Rehabilitation Company LLC dba Surgeons Choice Medical Center filed with the Massachusetts Attorney General, a third-party vendor, Aesto, experienced a network security incident affecting a segment of its Amazon Web Services infrastructure. Aesto reports that a forensic investigation determined an unauthorized actor copied certain protected health information stored on Aesto's network between December 2 and December 18, 2025. Surgeons Choice Medical Center relies on Aesto for data services, and patient records connected to the hospital were among the files taken.
Aesto reports that it engaged external cybersecurity professionals and completed a forensic review, and that it confirmed on May 26, 2026 that Surgeons Choice Medical Center data had been copied. Surgeons Choice Medical Center began mailing written notices to affected individuals and reported the matter to the Massachusetts Attorney General on August 21, 2026. The notice indicates that the affected files contained Social Security numbers and medical information. The hospital is offering affected individuals 24 months of complimentary Single-Bureau credit monitoring, along with credit report and credit score services. Neither Aesto nor Surgeons Choice Medical Center reports evidence of misuse to date. The gap between the December 2025 access and the August 2026 notices, roughly eight months, is one of the questions our investigation is examining.
Because the reported data includes Social Security numbers and medical information held on behalf of a hospital, affected individuals may face an elevated risk of identity theft, medical identity theft, and fraudulent use of health benefits.
