What happened
On May 18, 2026, Sterling Global Financial Limited ("Sterling Global Financial") detected a system security incident affecting its network environment. According to the notice filed with the Massachusetts Attorney General, the company worked with external cybersecurity experts to investigate, contain, and eradicate the incident. A detailed review of the affected files concluded on July 23, 2026, and determined that files containing certain personal information had been involved in the incident. The full period of unauthorized access, and how the intruder gained entry, were not disclosed in the public filing.
Sterling Global Financial filed notice with the Massachusetts Attorney General and mailed written notification letters on August 21, 2026, approximately three months after the incident was discovered. According to the notice, the information involved was financial account information. The Massachusetts filing lists two Massachusetts residents as affected. The total number of individuals notified nationwide has not been publicly disclosed. Affected individuals are being offered complimentary credit monitoring and identity restoration services through Cyberscout, a TransUnion company, for 12 months, with the option to extend coverage to 24 months. The letter states that enrollment must be completed within 120 days of its date.
Because the information reported as involved includes financial account details, the exposure carries an elevated risk of unauthorized transactions, account takeover attempts, and targeted phishing that references real account information. The company reports that it is not aware of any misuse of the affected data. Whether Sterling Global Financial's pre-breach data security practices met applicable legal standards, why notification took roughly three months after discovery, and what categories of information beyond financial account data may have been held in the affected files are among the issues being evaluated.
What to do if you received a letter
Keep your notice letter
Do not discard it. Your letter contains the enrollment code for the credit monitoring and identity restoration service and is important evidence if you decide to participate in a lawsuit.
Enroll in the free 12-month credit monitoring and identity restoration service
Enroll in the Cyberscout monitoring service offered in your letter, which must be activated within 120 days of the letter's date, and ask about the extension to 24 months. Accepting this benefit does not waive your right to pursue legal action.
Place a fraud alert or credit freeze
Contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion to place a fraud alert or freeze on your file. Request a free weekly credit report from AnnualCreditReport.com, and use the FTC's IdentityTheft.gov recovery guide. Because financial account information was reported as involved, pay particular attention to your bank, credit card, and investment statements, and consider asking your financial institution to reissue any account numbers referenced in your letter.
