What happened
According to a breach notice filed with the Massachusetts Attorney General on July 6, 2026, T.A. Solberg Co., Inc. ("TAS"), a Wisconsin-based family-owned retail company that operates grocery stores and related businesses, detected unauthorized access to its computer network on March 3, 2026. The company states that it immediately initiated its incident-response protocols, took certain systems offline, and engaged an outside cybersecurity firm to investigate. The forensic investigation confirmed that an unauthorized individual viewed and obtained files stored on the TAS network.
On June 5, 2026, TAS determined that the affected files contained personal information belonging to Massachusetts residents. The public notice states that the exposed information included Social Security numbers, and no additional data types were listed. TAS reports that it removed affected systems from the network, enhanced its network security policies and procedures, and provided complimentary identity-monitoring services to impacted individuals. The company began notifying affected individuals in early July 2026, roughly four months after it detected the unauthorized access.
Because a Social Security number was reported to be involved, affected individuals may face an elevated risk of identity theft and tax or financial fraud. Whether the company's pre-breach security practices met legal standards, and whether the interval between detection and notification caused additional harm, are among the issues being evaluated.
