What happened
On January 27, 2026, Talen Energy Corporation detected unauthorized activity on certain of its computer systems. The company states that it moved to secure its environment, engaged third-party cybersecurity specialists to investigate, and contacted law enforcement. The investigation determined that an unauthorized actor had accessed and copied certain files containing personal information.
Talen Energy completed its review of the affected files and began notifying individuals in August 2026, with consumer notification letters dated August 13, 2026 and a copy filed with the Massachusetts Attorney General. According to the notice, the information involved varies by individual and may have included name, date of birth, address, telephone number, employee ID, Social Security number, driver's license number or other government identification number, and medical information such as provider names and diagnosis details. The company reports that it has implemented additional safeguards and is offering 24 months of complimentary identity-protection services through IDX.
Roughly six and a half months passed between detection of the incident on January 27, 2026 and the mailing of notification letters on August 13, 2026. Several state breach notification statutes require notice without unreasonable delay, and the length of that interval is one of the issues our investigation is evaluating. The reported combination of Social Security numbers, government identification numbers, and medical information is among the more sensitive data sets to be exposed in a breach, because medical details cannot be reissued the way an account number can.
