What happened
Terry J. Dubrow, MD, A Medical Corporation (the "Practice"), a plastic surgery practice based in Newport Beach, California, has reported a data security incident to the California Attorney General. According to the Practice's notice, an investigation determined that an unauthorized actor accessed a portion of its network beginning on January 16, 2025 and acquired certain data the Practice maintains. On July 27, 2026, the Practice learned that patients' personal information had been accessed and acquired without authorization.
Notification letters were mailed on August 13, 2026, roughly 18 months after the unauthorized access is reported to have begun. The notice states that the information involved may include name, Social Security number, driver's license or state ID number, phone number, mailing address, email address, and medical information such as date of birth, prescription information, treatment information, procedure images, and x-rays. The Practice says it secured its systems with the help of outside forensic experts, reported the incident to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and implemented additional security measures. Affected individuals are being offered complimentary identity protection services through IDX, with an enrollment deadline of November 13, 2026.
Because the reported categories include Social Security numbers alongside clinical records, prescription details, and surgical procedure images, the potential harm extends beyond ordinary financial fraud to medical identity theft and privacy exposure. Whether the Practice's pre-breach security practices met the standards required of a healthcare provider, and whether the length of time the intrusion went undetected caused additional harm, are among the issues being evaluated.
