What happened
According to a notice filed with the Massachusetts Attorney General on August 7, 2026, The Financial Guys, LLC and affiliates ("The Financial Guys") detected suspicious activity involving a vendor's computer network on July 9, 2026. An investigation determined that an unauthorized actor had gained access to a single system within that network. The company says it contained the incident by taking systems offline, disabling remote access, changing user passwords and rotating credentials, and restoring the affected system.
The Financial Guys states that it engaged outside cybersecurity and privacy professionals, implemented additional security and detection measures, and notified relevant government agencies and the individuals whose information may have been involved. The categories of information reported as potentially present on the compromised system include name, date of birth, address, phone number, Social Security number, account number, credit or debit card number, and other financial information. Impacted individuals are being offered complimentary identity monitoring through Kroll, including credit monitoring, fraud consultation, and identity theft restoration, with the enrollment deadline and monitoring term stated in each notification letter. The Massachusetts filing reports 17 Massachusetts residents as potentially impacted, and the total number of individuals notified nationwide has not been publicly disclosed.
Social Security numbers, dates of birth, financial account numbers, and payment card numbers are among the most damaging categories of data to lose, because they can be used to open fraudulent accounts, file false tax returns, and take over existing financial accounts. Because the incident involved a vendor's network rather than the firm's own systems, the questions being evaluated include how the vendor was selected and monitored, what security requirements applied to client data held by third parties, whether reasonable safeguards were in place, and how many people were ultimately affected.
What to do if you received a letter
Keep your notice letter
Do not discard it. Your letter contains the membership number needed to activate identity monitoring and is important evidence if you decide to participate in a lawsuit.
Enroll in the free Kroll identity monitoring
Enroll in the Kroll credit monitoring and identity theft restoration services using the membership number in your letter, before the activation deadline the letter states. Accepting this benefit does not waive your right to pursue legal action.
Place a fraud alert or credit freeze
Contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion to place a fraud alert or freeze on your file. Request a free weekly credit report from AnnualCreditReport.com, and use the FTC's IdentityTheft.gov recovery guide. Because financial account and payment card numbers may have been involved, also review brokerage, retirement, and insurance account statements, and consider asking your bank or card issuer to reissue affected cards.

Common questions
I received a data breach letter from The Financial Guys. What should I do? +
Keep the letter, activate the free Kroll identity monitoring using the membership number printed on it before the stated deadline, order and review your free credit reports, review your bank, credit card, brokerage, retirement, and insurance statements for unfamiliar activity, consider placing a fraud alert or a security freeze on your credit file, and contact a data breach attorney for a free consultation. Because payment card numbers may have been involved, you may also want to ask your card issuer for replacement cards. Activating credit monitoring does not waive your right to sue.

What personal information was exposed in the breach? +
The notice states that the information potentially present on the compromised system includes name, date of birth, address, phone number, Social Security number, account number, credit or debit card number, and other financial information. Did The Financial Guys offer free credit monitoring? +
Yes. The Financial Guys is offering complimentary identity monitoring through Kroll, which includes single bureau credit monitoring, fraud consultation, and identity theft restoration services.
