What happened
The Town of Wilbraham has disclosed that a former Town employee accessed the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) data system without authorization, exposing personal driver and vehicle information belonging to 161 residents, all of whom are Massachusetts residents. The Town mailed notification letters to affected individuals on June 24, 2026, and reported the incident to the Massachusetts Attorney General's office on June 30, 2026.
According to the notice, the information that could have been accessed includes names and photographs, residential addresses, driver's-license numbers and suspension status, vehicle registration and ownership history, vehicle title and excise-tax status, non-renewal tickets, and, where applicable, ignition interlock device information. The Town is offering affected residents one year of complimentary identity and credit monitoring through Aura, which must be activated by June 17, 2027. The Town is also coordinating with the RMV to provide a free replacement driver's license or ID card bearing a new state-assigned number on request, and to cover fees for related professional-license replacements.
Because the exposed records include government-issued identifiers such as driver's-license numbers together with names, addresses, and photographs, affected residents may face an elevated risk of identity theft and related fraud. The dates of the unauthorized access, how it was discovered, and how long it continued were not detailed in the public notice, and these remain points Dapeer Law is evaluating.
