What happened
According to the notice filed with the California Attorney General, Alisal Union School District identified unusual activity within its computer network on or around June 22, 2026. The district reports that it engaged third-party cybersecurity specialists, restored operations using viable backups, and launched an investigation. That investigation determined that certain information may have been accessed or downloaded without authorization on or around June 19, 2026. The district provided a general notice of the matter on August 27, 2026.
The district then conducted a file-by-file review to identify the individuals and categories of information involved, which it completed on October 1, 2026. Notice letters dated October 7, 2026 were sent to affected individuals, roughly three and a half months after the activity was discovered. The sample letter filed with regulators lists names as the category of information involved, and does not report Social Security numbers or financial account numbers. Recipients are offered 12 months of complimentary Experian IdentityWorks credit monitoring and identity protection, with enrollment required by December 31, 2026.
Even where the reported data is limited, the people affected by a school district breach are often children, whose information can be misused for years before anyone checks for it. Exposed names can also be paired with information from other sources to support targeted phishing and impersonation attempts aimed at families. Our investigation is examining whether reasonable safeguards were in place, whether the individual letters disclose additional data elements beyond the sample notice, and whether the time between discovery and notification was reasonable under California law.
What to do if you received a letter
Keep your notice letter
Do not discard your Alisal Union School District breach notice. The letter contains the activation code for the free Experian credit monitoring and documents the categories of information the district says were involved, which is important evidence if you decide to participate in a lawsuit.
Enroll in the free 12-month credit monitoring
Enroll in the Experian IdentityWorks monitoring offered in your letter by December 31, 2026, using the activation code printed on your notice. Accepting this benefit does not waive your right to pursue legal action.
Place a fraud alert or credit freeze
Contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion to place a fraud alert or freeze on your file. Request a free weekly credit report from AnnualCreditReport.com, and use the FTC's IdentityTheft.gov recovery guide. Parents and guardians may also want to ask each of the three credit bureaus whether a credit file exists in a minor student's name, since one generally should not.
