What happened
Blank Rome LLP, a national law firm headquartered in Philadelphia, reported that on May 21, 2026 an unauthorized third party telephoned one of the firm's attorneys, posed as a member of the firm's IT department, and misled the attorney into uploading files to an external Google Drive account. According to the firm, it identified the incident within two hours, took the attorney's device offline, deleted the files that had been uploaded, and began an investigation with the support of external cybersecurity professionals. The firm also notified law enforcement and reports that it is supporting the resulting investigation.
Blank Rome states that it completed a review of the files involved on or around May 28, 2026 and determined that they contained personal information belonging to affected individuals. The firm filed notice with the California Attorney General and began mailing letters to potentially affected individuals on or about June 26, 2026. The public notice states that the involved files contained names and Social Security numbers, and may also have contained addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, taxpayer identification numbers, driver's license numbers, state identification card numbers, passport numbers, other government-issued identification numbers, financial account numbers, payment card information, medical information, and health insurance information. Impacted individuals are being offered 12 to 24 months of complimentary access to Epiq's Privacy Solutions ID credit-monitoring and identity-protection services.
Because Blank Rome is a law firm that holds information in connection with client matters, affected individuals may have had sensitive personal, financial, and health information on file. Whether the firm's pre-breach security practices and employee training met applicable legal standards, and whether the social-engineering controls in place were adequate, are among the issues being evaluated.
