What happened
According to Boston Capital Holdings LP ("Boston Capital"), a Boston, Massachusetts-based real-estate investment firm specializing in affordable housing, an unauthorized actor accessed the company's network and copied certain files between January 16 and January 22, 2026. The company has described the intruder as a "sophisticated cyber actor" that exploited legitimate cloud services in an attempt to bypass Boston Capital's security measures. The incident was discovered on February 12, 2026, at which point Boston Capital engaged third-party cyber-security specialists to secure its network and investigate the scope of the intrusion.
Boston Capital completed its review of the affected files on May 5, 2026 and began mailing individual notification letters on May 18, 2026, more than three months after the intrusion was discovered. The company's public notice indicates that affected information included each individual's name in combination with unspecified additional data elements that are itemized in the personalized letters. Boston Capital is offering complimentary identity-monitoring services to all notified individuals; the provider, bureau, and enrollment period are described in the mailed notice.
Because Boston Capital operates in real-estate investment and affordable-housing finance, files held by the company may have contained sensitive personal, financial, or tax information tied to investors, residents, partners, and employees. Whether the company's pre-breach security practices met legal standards, whether its reliance on cloud services created avoidable risk, and whether the multi-month notification delay caused additional harm to notice recipients are among the issues being evaluated.
