What happened
According to the notice filed with state regulators, Elara Caring determined that an unauthorized actor gained access to two employee email accounts on October 6, 2025 and February 11, 2026. The company has stated that the actor's primary objective was to reroute payroll deposits into a fraudulent bank account, but in carrying out that scheme the actor also viewed or obtained emails and files that contained personal and medical information. Elara Caring has said it discovered the suspicious activity on April 17, 2026 and engaged outside cybersecurity specialists to investigate.
After completing its review, Elara Caring began mailing notice letters dated June 23, 2026, roughly two months after the activity was discovered and more than eight months after the earliest unauthorized access. The company filed notice with the Massachusetts Attorney General on June 24, 2026 and with the Texas Attorney General on June 25, 2026. State filings indicate that 3,774 individuals were affected in total, including 2,631 Texas residents and 1,143 Massachusetts residents. The notice does not appear to offer complimentary credit-monitoring services.
The categories of information reported vary by individual and state. For Texas residents, the company reports that names, dates of birth, medical information, and health-insurance details may have been involved. For Massachusetts residents, the company reports that medical information may have been involved. Because medical and health-insurance information is reported to be affected, individuals may face an elevated risk of medical-identity fraud. Elara Caring has stated that it is not aware of any actual or attempted misuse of the information.

Keep your notice letter
Do not discard it. Your letter documents that your information was involved and is important evidence if you decide to participate in a lawsuit.

You can request free annual credit reports at AnnualCreditReport.com, place a fraud alert or security freeze with Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion, and review your financial and healthcare statements regularly. Taking these protective steps does not waive your right to pursue legal action.
