What happened in the Facial Surgery Group data breach
According to its notice letter, Facial Surgery Group detected suspicious activity within its email environment on November 24, 2025. The letter says it disabled the affected email account, changed the account password, terminated active sessions and engaged a specialized third-party cybersecurity firm and IT personnel to investigate. The forensic investigation concluded on February 2, 2026, and determined that there was potential unauthorized access to certain information contained in an employee's email account.
Facial Surgery Group engaged a third-party data mining vendor to determine whose information, and what type of information, was contained in the account. That review was completed on September 9, 2026. The letter and the Massachusetts filing both list date of birth, medical record number (MRN), patient account number (PAN), Medicaid number, health insurance group number, medical diagnosis information, medical treatment/procedure information, treatment location, clinical information and provider name as information that may have been subject to unauthorized access, and the Massachusetts filing also lists medical information.
The letter is dated October 16, 2026, nearly 11 months after the suspicious activity was detected, and offers 24 months of single bureau credit monitoring at no charge. Facial Surgery Group says it has no evidence that any sensitive information has been misused. Whether its email security practices met legal standards, and whether the time between detection and notice caused additional harm, are among the issues being evaluated.
