What happened
On February 2, 2026, Gateways Community Services ("Gateways"), a Nashua, New Hampshire nonprofit that supports individuals with developmental and physical disabilities, discovered suspicious activity in an employee email account. The organization secured the affected account, engaged a third-party cybersecurity firm to conduct a forensic investigation, and on March 10, 2026 the forensic firm confirmed that one file had been compromised as a result of a phishing email attack.
Gateways then reviewed the file to identify affected individuals and the data involved, and began issuing written notices on May 5, 2026, roughly three months after the incident was discovered. According to the notice filed with the Maine Attorney General, the compromised W-2 document may have contained names, mailing addresses, Social Security numbers, the company Employer Identification Number (EIN), and federal, state, and local tax withholdings. Gateways is offering 12 months of complimentary single-bureau credit monitoring, credit reports, credit scores, same-day credit file change alerts, and a designated fraud assistance line.
Because the compromised file was a W-2, affected individuals face an elevated risk of tax-related identity theft, including fraudulent federal or state tax returns filed in their names. Whether Gateways' pre-breach security practices, including its email security controls and staff phishing training, met legal standards, and whether the multi-month notification delay caused additional harm to affected individuals, are among the issues being evaluated.
What to do if you received a letter
Keep your notice letter
Do not discard it. Your letter contains the enrollment code for credit monitoring and is important evidence if you decide to participate in a lawsuit.
Enroll in the free 12-month credit monitoring
Enroll in the single-bureau credit monitoring, credit score, and credit file change alert services offered in your letter before the stated deadline. Accepting this benefit does not waive your right to pursue legal action.
Place a fraud alert or credit freeze
Contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion to place a fraud alert or freeze on your file. Request a free weekly credit report from AnnualCreditReport.com, and use the FTC's IdentityTheft.gov recovery guide. Because a W-2 was involved, also consider requesting an IRS Identity Protection PIN to help block fraudulent federal tax returns filed in your name.
