Background

What happened

Ginsberg Jacobs LLC ("Ginsberg Jacobs"), a Chicago business and real estate law firm, determined that an unauthorized party accessed its network on or around July 7, 2025. The firm says it responded by launching an investigation with outside cybersecurity professionals, who worked to identify what information was present on the affected systems.

That review was not completed until July 17, 2026, roughly a year after the intrusion. Ginsberg Jacobs began mailing notification letters on August 6, 2026 and reported the incident to the Massachusetts Attorney General on August 8, 2026. The filing identifies 3 affected individuals, all Massachusetts residents. The firm is offering complimentary IDX identity theft protection services, which include credit and CyberScan monitoring, up to $1,000,000 in identity theft insurance, and fully managed identity recovery assistance.

The notice states that full names were removed from the firm's network and that other confidential information may also have been affected, without itemizing further categories. Because law firms routinely hold sensitive client and third-party records, including financial, transactional, and identifying data, the categories involved for any individual may be broader than the notice describes. Whether the firm's pre-breach security practices met legal standards, and whether the roughly 13-month gap between the intrusion and notification caused additional harm, are among the issues being evaluated.

What to do if you received a letter

1

Keep your notice letter

Do not discard it. Your letter contains the enrollment code for the IDX identity protection services and is important evidence if you decide to participate in a lawsuit.

2

Enroll in the free IDX identity protection services

Enroll in the IDX credit and CyberScan monitoring offered in your letter before the deadline printed in the notice. Accepting this benefit does not waive your right to pursue legal action.

3

Place a fraud alert or credit freeze

Contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion to place a fraud alert or freeze on your file. Request a free weekly credit report from AnnualCreditReport.com, and use the FTC's IdentityTheft.gov recovery guide. Because the notice indicates that unspecified confidential information may have been involved, also watch for unfamiliar accounts, loan or credit inquiries, and correspondence referencing transactions you did not authorize.
