What happened
According to a notice Lake Region Healthcare Corporation filed with the Massachusetts Attorney General, the organization detected unauthorized access to its network on May 19, 2025. Lake Region Healthcare reports that it secured its systems, notified law enforcement, and engaged outside cybersecurity professionals to investigate. The investigation determined that certain files were accessed or removed by unknown actors on that same day. The company has stated that its electronic health record system was not affected.
Lake Region Healthcare reports that it completed its review of the affected files on June 5, 2026 and began mailing written notices to affected individuals on July 1, 2026. The notice indicates that the files involved contained Social Security numbers and medical information. The company is offering enrolled individuals 12 months of complimentary identity and credit monitoring through Cyberscout, a TransUnion company. The gap between the May 2025 incident and the July 2026 notices, roughly 13 months, is one of the questions our investigation is examining.
Because the exposed data reportedly includes Social Security numbers and medical information held by a healthcare provider, affected individuals may face an elevated risk of identity theft, medical identity theft, and fraudulent use of health benefits. Medical information can carry heightened sensitivity and may be subject to protections under state law and federal health privacy rules.
