What happened
On November 13, 2025, Morningstar Properties, LLC ("Morningstar Properties"), a North Carolina-based real-estate investment and management firm headquartered in Matthews, North Carolina, detected suspicious activity within its computer network. According to the notice filed with the Maine Attorney General, Morningstar Properties activated its internal response protocols, took certain affected systems offline, engaged an independent forensic cybersecurity firm, and notified federal law enforcement. The forensic investigation determined that an unauthorized actor had access to specific Morningstar systems from November 12 to 13, 2025.
Morningstar Properties completed its review of the affected data and began mailing notification letters on May 19, 2026, roughly six months after the suspicious activity was discovered. The company's letter states that certain personal information stored on its systems could have been viewed or obtained and that records belonging to the recipient "may have been involved," but the public filing does not itemize the specific categories of data. Morningstar Properties is offering 12 months of complimentary Experian IdentityWorks credit monitoring and identity-restoration services to affected individuals.
Because Morningstar Properties manages self-storage and marina properties and operates a real-estate investment business, the information held on its systems can include tenant, customer, vendor, and employee records such as names, contact details, payment information, government identifiers, and rental or lease documentation. Whether the company's pre-breach security practices met legal standards, and whether the six-month notification delay caused additional harm to affected individuals, are among the issues being evaluated.

How much money could I receive from a class action lawsuit? +
Data breach class action recoveries vary significantly. Settlements typically range from a few hundred dollars for basic out-of-pocket losses to several thousand dollars for documented identity theft, with class size, damages, and negotiation all affecting the final amount. No payout is guaranteed, and this investigation has not yet resulted in a settlement.
What personal information was exposed in the breach? +
Morningstar Properties' public notice states only that certain personal information stored on its systems could have been viewed or obtained and that records belonging to the recipient "may have been involved," without itemizing the specific categories. Because Morningstar Properties manages self-storage and marina properties and operates a real-estate investment business, the affected data may include some combination of names, contact information, payment or financial account information, government identifiers, and rental or lease records. Your individual notice letter should specify the categories of your data that were involved.
Did Morningstar Properties offer free credit monitoring? +
Yes. Morningstar Properties is providing 12 months of complimentary Experian IdentityWorks credit monitoring and identity-restoration services. Enroll before the deadline printed in your letter. Enrollment is separate from, and does not waive, your right to pursue a claim.
How many people were affected by the Morningstar Properties breach? +
The total number of affected individuals has not been publicly disclosed in the Maine Attorney General filing. This page will be updated as additional information becomes available.
Is there a deadline to take legal action? +
Yes. Statutes of limitations for data breach claims vary by state and legal theory, typically ranging from one to six years. Waiting can permanently bar your claim. Contact us as soon as possible for a free evaluation.
