What happened
On March 21, 2026, Ampex Data Systems Corp. ("Ampex Data Systems") detected unauthorized access to and encryption of servers at one of its office locations. The company immediately shut down the affected servers and engaged specialized forensic and cyber-security consultants. Containment was reached by March 23, 2026, after which Ampex began restoring its systems. Ampex notified the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) and the Department of Defense Cyber Crime Center (DC3), and worked with an incident-response service to negotiate with the threat actors in an effort to prevent or minimize the release of data.
Ampex completed its review of the affected data on May 9, 2026, and filed notification with the Maine Attorney General and began mailing letters to impacted individuals on May 18, 2026, roughly two months after the incident was discovered. According to the public notice, the information involved may include name, address, Social Security number, and date of birth, and, in a limited number of cases, driver's license number or banking information. The notice does not reference complimentary credit or identity-monitoring services. The total number of impacted individuals has not been publicly disclosed.
Because Social Security numbers, dates of birth, and, for some individuals, driver's license numbers and banking information were involved, the incident carries a heightened risk of identity theft and financial fraud. Whether Ampex's pre-breach security practices met legal standards, and whether the company's response, including the timing of notice and the absence of complimentary credit monitoring, caused additional harm to affected individuals, are among the issues being evaluated.
What to do if you received a letter
Keep your notice letter
Do not discard it. Your letter identifies the categories of your information that were involved and is important evidence if you decide to participate in a lawsuit.
Watch for identity-theft and financial-fraud warning signs
Because Social Security numbers, dates of birth, and, in some cases, driver's license numbers and banking information were involved, watch for unfamiliar accounts or inquiries on your credit reports, unexplained debits or transfers from your bank accounts, tax-return rejections, and notices about accounts or services you did not open. Report anything suspicious to your bank, the credit bureaus, the FTC, and Ampex immediately.
Place a fraud alert or credit freeze
Contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion to place a fraud alert or freeze on your file. Request a free weekly credit report from AnnualCreditReport.com, and use the FTC's IdentityTheft.gov recovery guide. Ampex did not offer complimentary credit monitoring with this notice, so consider whether to place a free fraud alert or security freeze, and whether to enroll in a paid monitoring service.
