What happened
On March 31, 2026, Service Management Group, LLC ("Service Management Group" or "SMG"), a Kansas City, Missouri-based customer experience management and research firm, detected suspicious activity within its internal corporate systems. With the assistance of third-party cybersecurity experts, the company determined that an unauthorized party accessed certain files between March 18 and April 7, 2026. Law enforcement was notified, and according to the notice the company has no evidence that the affected information has been misused.
Service Management Group completed its review of the affected files on July 15, 2026, then filed notice with the Massachusetts Attorney General and mailed written notification letters dated September 11, 2026, roughly five months after the activity was first detected. According to the notice, the accessed files may have contained one or more of the following data elements: name, Social Security number, driver's license number, other government-issued identification number, and health and dental insurance information. The Massachusetts filing lists eight Massachusetts residents as affected. The total number of individuals notified nationwide has not been publicly disclosed. Affected individuals are being offered a complimentary 24-month membership in Experian IdentityWorks, which includes credit monitoring, identity restoration support, and identity theft insurance.
Because the categories of information reported as involved include Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers, and health and dental insurance details, the exposure carries a heightened risk of identity theft, tax fraud, and medical or insurance identity fraud that can persist for years. The roughly five-month interval between detection and notification is itself significant, since several state breach notification statutes require notice without unreasonable delay. Whether the company's pre-breach data security practices met applicable legal standards, whether the information it retained was reasonably safeguarded, and whether notice was provided in a timely manner are among the issues being evaluated.
What to do if you received a letter
Keep your notice letter
Do not discard it. Your letter contains the engagement number needed to activate the Experian IdentityWorks membership and is important evidence if you decide to participate in a lawsuit.
Enroll in the free 24-month Experian IdentityWorks membership
Activate the complimentary 24-month Experian IdentityWorks membership offered in your letter before the enrollment deadline printed on it. Accepting this benefit does not waive your right to pursue legal action.
Place a fraud alert or credit freeze
Contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion to place a fraud alert or freeze on your file. Request a free weekly credit report from AnnualCreditReport.com, and use the FTC's IdentityTheft.gov recovery guide. Because health and dental insurance information was reported as involved, also review any explanation of benefits statements for services you did not receive.

Common questions

Keep the letter, activate the free 24-month Experian IdentityWorks membership before the deadline printed in your notice, review your credit reports and financial accounts for activity you did not authorize, consider a fraud alert or a security freeze with all three credit bureaus, and contact a data breach attorney for a free consultation. Because Social Security numbers and health and dental insurance information were reported as involved, also watch for unfamiliar tax filings and for explanation of benefits statements covering care you did not receive.
