Background

What happened

According to a notice filed with the Massachusetts Attorney General, an unauthorized actor accessed an Amazon Web Services environment operated by Aesto, a vendor that stored records for Shenandoah Valley Medical System, Inc. d/b/a Shenandoah Community Health, between December 2 and December 18, 2025. Aesto reports that certain patient files were copied during that period. The activity was detected on December 18, 2025, and the affected environment was secured.

Aesto engaged outside cybersecurity professionals and, after a forensic review and a manual review of the affected documents, confirmed on May 26, 2026 that Social Security numbers belonging to 30 Shenandoah Valley Medical System patients were involved. Written notices were mailed to the affected Massachusetts residents on August 11, 2026, roughly eight months after the intrusion was discovered. Recipients are being offered complimentary Cyberscout credit monitoring, a single bureau service that must be activated within 90 days of the date printed on the letter.

Because the information involved is limited to Social Security numbers, the primary risk to notice recipients is identity theft and financial fraud rather than misuse of medical records alone. A Social Security number cannot be changed the way a password or an account number can, so exposure carries a long tail of risk. Whether Shenandoah Valley Medical System and Aesto maintained reasonable safeguards for patient data under HIPAA and applicable state data protection laws, and whether the eight month gap between discovery and notification was reasonable, are among the issues being evaluated.

What to do if you received a letter

1

Keep your notice letter

Do not discard it. Your letter contains the enrollment code for credit monitoring and is important evidence if you decide to participate in a lawsuit.

2

Enroll in the free Cyberscout credit monitoring

Enroll in the Cyberscout (a TransUnion company) monitoring offered in your letter within 90 days of the letter date, using the activation link printed in the notice. Accepting this benefit does not waive your right to pursue legal action.

3

Place a fraud alert or credit freeze

Contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion to place a fraud alert or freeze on your file. Request a free weekly credit report from AnnualCreditReport.com, and use the FTC's IdentityTheft.gov recovery guide. Because Social Security numbers were involved, also watch for tax filings, credit applications, and government benefit claims you did not initiate.

FAQ

Common questions

I received a data breach letter from Shenandoah Valley Medical System. What should I do? +

Keep your letter, activate the complimentary Cyberscout credit monitoring within the 90 day window described in the notice, place a fraud alert or security freeze with the three credit bureaus, order your free credit reports, and review bank, credit card, and health insurance statements for activity you do not recognize. Because a Social Security number was involved, consider requesting an IRS Identity Protection PIN as well. A free consultation with a data breach attorney can confirm your options.
