Background

What happened

Tange, Mann & Garza, P.C. ("TMG"), a Houston accounting firm that provides audit, tax, and advisory services to corporate and nonprofit clients, disclosed a data security incident affecting personal information in its systems. According to the notice letters, the firm identified suspicious activity, secured its network, and opened an investigation with the assistance of outside specialists to determine what information was involved. The firm did not publicly state when the unauthorized activity began or when it was discovered.

TMG reported the incident to the Texas Attorney General on July 21, 2026 and to the Massachusetts Attorney General on August 11, 2026, and mailed notification letters to affected individuals on or about August 11, 2026. State filings report 702 people affected, 691 in Texas and 11 in Massachusetts. The categories of information reported in those filings include names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers, and financial account or payment card numbers. The letters themselves refer only to "personal information," so individual recipients should check their own notice for the specific categories involved.

TMG is offering 24 months of complimentary credit monitoring and identity restoration through IDX, with an enrollment deadline of November 11, 2026. Because an accounting firm typically holds Social Security numbers, tax records, and bank account details for both clients and the employees and donors of its client organizations, exposure of this kind of data carries an elevated risk of tax refund fraud, new-account fraud, and financial account takeover. Whether the firm's pre-breach security practices met legal standards is among the issues being evaluated.

What to do if you received a letter

1

Keep your notice letter

Do not discard it. Your letter contains the IDX enrollment code you need for the free credit monitoring and is important evidence if you decide to participate in a lawsuit.

2

Enroll in the free 24-month credit monitoring

Enroll in the IDX credit monitoring and identity restoration offered in your letter before the November 11, 2026 deadline, using the enrollment code printed on your notice. Accepting this benefit does not waive your right to pursue legal action.

3

Place a fraud alert or credit freeze

Contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion to place a fraud alert or freeze on your file. Request a free weekly credit report from AnnualCreditReport.com, and use the FTC's IdentityTheft.gov recovery guide. Because financial account and payment card numbers are among the categories reported to state regulators, also review bank, credit card, and retirement account statements line by line, and consider filing an IRS Identity Protection PIN request before the next tax season.

4

FAQ

Common questions

I received a data breach letter from Tange, Mann & Garza. What should I do? +

Keep the letter, enroll in the free 24-month IDX credit monitoring and identity restoration before the November 11, 2026 deadline using the code in your notice, place a fraud alert or credit freeze on your credit file, and review bank, credit card, and retirement account statements for unfamiliar activity. Because Social Security numbers are among the categories reported to state regulators, consider requesting an IRS Identity Protection PIN as well. Accepting credit monitoring does not waive your right to sue.

Am I eligible to join a class action against Tange, Mann & Garza? +

If you received an August 2026 breach notice from Tange, Mann & Garza, you are likely eligible for a free case evaluation. Eligibility depends on your state of residence, the categories of your data that were involved, and any losses or time you have spent responding. Dapeer Law will review your notice at no cost.

How much money could I receive from a class action lawsuit? +

Data breach class action recoveries vary significantly. Settlements typically range from a few hundred dollars for basic out-of-pocket losses to several thousand dollars for documented identity theft, with class size, damages, and negotiation all affecting the final amount. No payout is guaranteed, and this investigation has not yet resulted in a settlement.

What personal information was exposed in the breach? +

State regulator filings report that the involved information includes names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers, and financial account numbers or credit and debit card numbers. The notice letters mailed to individuals refer more generally to "personal information," so your own letter is the best source for the specific categories that applied to you.

Did Tange, Mann & Garza offer free credit monitoring? +

Yes. The firm is providing 24 months of complimentary credit monitoring and identity restoration services through IDX, covering all three credit bureaus. Enrollment is available at app.idx.us/account-creation/protect using the code in your letter, and the stated deadline is November 11, 2026. IDX can be reached at 1-833-788-9712, Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Enrolling is separate from, and does not waive, your right to pursue a claim.

State filings report 702 affected individuals, 691 residents of Texas and 11 residents of Massachusetts. Additional states may report their own counts, and this page will be updated as more information becomes available.

Is there a deadline to take legal action? +

Yes. Statutes of limitations for data breach claims vary by state and legal theory, typically ranging from one to six years. Waiting can permanently bar your claim. Contact us as soon as possible for a free evaluation.
