What happened
In a notice filed with the Massachusetts Attorney General's Office on August 17, 2026 (reference number 2026-1373), the Town of North Andover reported that its Office of Town Counsel inadvertently disclosed an individual's Social Security number in responses to three separate public records requests. The Town states that the records-request responses were emailed to three outside email addresses before the disclosure was identified.
According to the Town, notification was sent to the affected individual on August 12, 2026, and the Town contacted the three email recipients the same morning to request deletion of the emails and proof of deletion. The Town is offering 12 months of complimentary credit monitoring and identity restoration services through a credit monitoring provider selected by the affected individual. The Massachusetts filing identifies one Massachusetts resident as affected, and the incident details were last updated on August 18, 2026.
Whether the Town's public records review procedures were adequate to prevent Social Security numbers from being released, whether the disclosed information was in fact deleted by all three recipients, and whether the disclosure caused any further exposure, are among the issues being evaluated.
