What happened
On January 14, 2026, The Beacon Mutual Insurance Company (Beacon Mutual), a workers' compensation insurance carrier headquartered in Warwick, Rhode Island, detected unusual activity within its computer network. The company launched immediate containment measures, began an internal investigation, engaged outside cybersecurity specialists, and referred the matter to law enforcement. The resulting forensic analysis determined that an unauthorized individual had accessed certain systems between January 7 and January 14, 2026 and copied files from the environment during that period.
Beacon Mutual then conducted what it described as a comprehensive and time-intensive file review, and on April 16, 2026 determined that some of the extracted documents contained sensitive personal information belonging to customers and claimants. The company began mailing notification letters on May 18, 2026, more than four months after the suspicious activity was first discovered. The public filing with the Maine Attorney General states that the impacted files contained personal information with the specific data elements being disclosed individually in each person's letter, without itemizing the full categories of data in the public notice. Beacon Mutual is offering a complimentary Experian IdentityWorks membership to all impacted individuals.
Because workers' compensation insurers routinely collect highly sensitive employee, policyholder, and claimant information, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, contact information, employment and wage data, and medical and injury-claim records, the specific categories of data exposed in this incident, whether Beacon Mutual's pre-breach security controls met applicable legal and industry standards, and whether the multi-month notification delay caused additional harm to affected individuals are among the issues being evaluated.

Common questions
I received a data breach letter from Beacon Mutual. What should I do? +
Keep the letter, enroll in the complimentary Experian IdentityWorks membership before the deadline printed on your notice, place a free fraud alert or security freeze on your credit file with one of the three major bureaus, review your bank, credit card, and any workers' compensation claim statements for unfamiliar activity, and contact a data breach attorney for a free consultation. Accepting credit monitoring does not waive your right to sue.
Am I eligible to join a class action against Beacon Mutual? +
If you received a May 2026 data breach notice from Beacon Mutual, you are likely eligible for a free case evaluation. Eligibility depends on your state of residence, the categories of your data that were exposed, and any losses you have suffered. Dapeer Law will review your notice at no cost.
How much money could I receive from a class action lawsuit? +
Data breach class action recoveries vary significantly. Settlements typically range from a few hundred dollars for basic out-of-pocket losses to several thousand dollars for documented identity theft, with class size, damages, and negotiation all affecting the final amount. No payout is guaranteed, and this investigation has not yet resulted in a settlement.
What personal information was exposed in the breach? +
Beacon Mutual's public filing with the Maine Attorney General states that the impacted files contained personal information, with the specific data elements being disclosed individually in each affected person's letter rather than itemized in the public notice. Because Beacon Mutual is a workers' compensation carrier, the exposed data may include some combination of names, addresses, contact information, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, employment and wage information, or insurance and injury-claim details. Your individual notice letter should specify the categories of your data that were involved.
Did Beacon Mutual offer free credit monitoring? +
Yes. Beacon Mutual is offering a complimentary Experian IdentityWorks membership. Use the unique enrollment code printed in your notice and enroll before the deadline stated in the letter. The public filing does not state the duration of the free coverage. Enrollment is separate from, and does not waive, your right to pursue a claim.
How many people were affected by the Beacon Mutual breach? +
The total number of affected individuals was not disclosed in the May 18, 2026 filing with the Maine Attorney General. This page will be updated as additional information becomes available.
Is there a deadline to take legal action? +
Yes. Statutes of limitations for data breach claims vary by state and legal theory, typically ranging from one to six years. Waiting can permanently bar your claim. Contact us as soon as possible for a free evaluation.
