What happened

This lawsuit, Peek, et al. v. Borough of Runnemede, et al., claims that the vacant and abandoned property registration programs run by five Camden County towns were unconstitutional and violated New Jersey law, and that the towns collected registration fees, in many cases from owners whose homes were never vacant or abandoned. The plaintiffs asked for refunds. The case is pending in the Superior Court of New Jersey, Law Division, Camden County.

The defendant municipalities deny the allegations and do not admit wrongdoing. They agreed to settle to avoid the costs and uncertainty of continued litigation.
