Compex Legal Services, Inc. agreed to an $872,500 settlement over an April 2024 cyber incident in which an unauthorized user gained access to its systems and to the personally identifiable information (PII) and protected health information (PHI) Compex held for law firms and insurance carriers. - You were notified by Compex Legal Services, Inc. that your personally identifiable information or protected health information was, or could have been, impacted by the April 2024 Cyber Incident.
- Notice of the Cyber Incident was mailed and published by Compex to Class Members starting in August 2024.
- Both Cash Payment and documented out-of-pocket loss benefits require a timely Claim Form submitted by August 19, 2026.
- Excluded: Compex Legal Services, Inc., its subsidiaries, parent companies, successors, predecessors, and any entity in which Compex or its parents have a controlling interest, along with their current or former officers, directors, and employees; the judges presiding over the case and members of their families; persons who timely submit a valid Request for Exclusion; and the successors or assigns of any excluded persons.

What happened
Plaintiffs filed this class action against Compex Legal Services, Inc., a California-based litigation record retrieval vendor that handles medical records, subpoena responses, and other case files for law firms and insurance carriers. In April 2024, Compex discovered that an unauthorized user had gained access to its computer systems containing Class Members' personally identifiable information and protected health information. Compex mailed and published notice of the Cyber Incident to Class Members starting in August 2024.
Compex denies the allegations and denies any wrongdoing or liability, and no court or other entity has made a determination that Compex violated any law. The parties agreed to settle to avoid the cost, risk, and time of continued litigation. Compex has agreed to pay $872,500 into a non-reversionary Settlement Fund used to pay class member benefits, attorneys' fees and costs, service awards, and notice and administration expenses.

1. Confirm you are eligible
You must have been notified by Compex that your PII or PHI was, or could have been, impacted by the April 2024 Cyber Incident. Defendant mailed and published notice starting in August 2024. 2. Tally up your claim
Each Class Member who submits a valid Claim Form is eligible to receive (a) a Cash Payment of $100 to $200, subject to pro rata adjustment based on the total number of valid claims, and (b) reimbursement of documented out-of-pocket losses up to $5,000. The Cash Payment does not require documentation. The documented-loss benefit requires receipts, statements, or similar proof tied to the Cyber Incident.

3. File online or by mail

4. Receive your payment
Payments are issued after the Court grants final approval at the August 31, 2026 Fairness Hearing and any appeals are resolved. The appeal process can take a year or more. No follow-up is required once your claim is submitted.

Berle in the Superior Court of California, County of Los Angeles, 312 North Spring Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012. Where the money is going
This is a non-reversionary common fund. Attorneys' fees and costs, service awards, and notice and administration costs come out of the $872,500 before payments are calculated for class members.
All amounts listed above are pending and subject to final court approval at the Fairness Hearing. The Court may award less than the amounts requested. If valid claims exceed what remains of the fund, the Cash Payment will be reduced on a pro rata basis.
Common questions
How much money will I receive?
Each valid claim is eligible for two benefits: (a) a Cash Payment of $100 to $200, subject to pro rata adjustment based on the total number of valid claims, and (b) reimbursement of up to $5,000 for documented out-of-pocket losses traceable to the Cyber Incident. If valid claims exceed what remains of the $872,500 Settlement Fund after attorneys' fees, service awards, and administration costs, the Cash Payment will be reduced on a pro rata basis. Actual Cash Payments may therefore be less than $100 depending on claim volume.
Do I need to submit proof of purchase?
The $100 to $200 Cash Payment does not require documentation. The documented-loss benefit (up to $5,000) does require proof, such as receipts, bank or card statements showing unauthorized charges, or correspondence from a credit bureau, IRS, or insurer tied to the April 2024 Cyber Incident. Submit copies, not originals. Review the Claim Form at CompexCyberIncidentSettlement.com for the specific verification fields and accepted documentation.
What if I didn’t receive a notice?
You can still attempt to file a claim if you did not receive a direct notice but believe your PII or PHI was held by Compex during the relevant period. Compex previously mailed and published notice to Class Members starting in August 2024 using contact information on file. Does staying in the class affect my right to sue later?
Yes. Unless you opt out by mailing a written Request for Exclusion postmarked by July 20, 2026, you will be bound by the Settlement and you will release the Released Claims described in paragraphs 39 to 41 of the Settlement Agreement. That means you cannot sue Compex (or other Released Parties) separately about the same April 2024 Cyber Incident. When will payments be sent out?
The Court will hold the Fairness Hearing on August 31, 2026 at 9:00 a.m. before Judge Elihu M. Berle in Los Angeles. Payments will only be issued after the Court grants final approval and any appeals are resolved. The appeal process can take a year or more.
