About
Google has agreed to pay $8.75 million to settle a class action lawsuit that accused the company of collecting and storing biometric data—like voice and face models—from Illinois students without proper consent.
The lawsuit claimed that students using Google Workspace for Education or G Suite for Education had features like Voice Match or Face Match enabled, which may have resulted in the creation of biometric profiles. Under the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA), companies must notify users and get written consent before collecting biometric data, especially from minors.
Google denies all wrongdoing but agreed to the settlement to avoid ongoing litigation. This resolution allows eligible students or their parents to file a claim and receive compensation—estimated at $30 to $100 per person—based on the number of valid claims filed.

How Much Can You Receive?
Eligible class members who submit a valid claim can expect to receive a payment estimated between $30 and $100. The exact amount depends on several factors:
Number of Valid Claims: The total settlement fund of $8.75 million will be divided among all approved claimants. If many people file claims, individual payments will be smaller; fewer claims mean higher payouts per person.
Court-Approved Fees and Costs: Portions of the settlement will cover attorneys’ fees, administrative costs, and service awards to class representatives. These expenses are deducted before payments are distributed.
Single Payment Per Person: Each eligible claimant can submit only one claim. Duplicate or multiple claims will be rejected.
While the payment might seem modest, it represents an important recognition of privacy rights violations and helps hold companies accountable for unauthorized biometric data collection.
