What happened
The lawsuit alleges that MUBI, a global streaming service, production company, and film distributor, failed to give California subscribers adequate notice that their MUBI subscriptions would automatically renew and failed to obtain sufficient consent to those renewals. The complaint asserts claims under California's False Advertising Law and California's Unfair Competition Law.
MUBI denies the allegations and denies any liability or wrongdoing. The parties agreed to settle to avoid the cost, risk, and time of continued litigation. The $1.6 million Settlement Fund is non-reversionary, meaning no portion goes back to MUBI.

Where the money is going
This is a non-reversionary common fund. Attorneys' fees, the Class Representative's Incentive Award, and notice and administration costs come out of the $1.6 million before payments are calculated for class members.
All amounts listed above are pending and subject to final court approval at the Fairness Hearing. The Court may award less than the amounts requested. Each valid claimant receives an equal share of the net fund, so the per-claimant amount depends on how many Claim Forms are submitted and will be reduced on a pro rata basis as more claims come in.
Common questions
How much money will I receive?
Each valid claimant receives an equal share of the $1.6 million Settlement Fund after Court-approved attorneys' fees (up to $400,000), an Incentive Award (up to $5,000), and notice and administration costs are deducted. The exact per-claimant amount is unknown until the claim period closes — it depends entirely on how many valid Claim Forms are submitted.
Do I need to submit proof of purchase?
No documentation is required. You must attest under penalty of perjury on the Claim Form that you are a Settlement Class Member and that the information you provided is true and correct.
What if I didn’t receive a notice?
Yes. Even if you did not receive a direct notice, you can still file a claim if you meet the class definition. Notice is being distributed by email and through the settlement website at MubiSettlement.com.
Does staying in the class affect my right to sue later?
If you stay in the Settlement Class (the default), you give up your right to sue MUBI for any federal or state law claims based on or arising from MUBI's automatic renewal of subscriptions during the class period. To preserve your right to sue, mail a signed exclusion letter to the Settlement Administrator postmarked by June 9, 2026.
When will payments be sent out?
Payments are issued after the Court grants final approval at the July 16, 2026 Fairness Hearing and any appeals are resolved. Appeals can take a year or more, so be patient.
