What happened
On January 16, 2025, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau entered a consent order against Block, Inc. (formerly Square, Inc.), the parent company of Cash App, resolving a matter primarily related to certain aspects of Cash App's historical customer service program and disputes practices. The CFPB's action covered the period from July 1, 2019 through January 16, 2025, during which Cash App's practices related to error resolution and unauthorized transaction disputes were at issue.
Block, Inc. denies the allegations and denies any wrongdoing or liability. As part of the resolution, Block agreed to provide compensation to certain affected Cash App consumers identified from its records. Because this is a federal regulatory enforcement action brought by the CFPB rather than a private class action lawsuit, there is no opt-out process, no class certification hearing, and no Final Fairness Hearing. Payments are distributed automatically by the Settlement Administrator, Epiq, on behalf of Block.

Where the money is going
The total compensation pool has not been publicly disclosed. Block, Inc. is distributing payments directly to affected Cash App consumers identified from its records, through Epiq as the Settlement Administrator. Because this is a government enforcement action by the CFPB rather than a private class action, the traditional common-fund structure (with attorneys' fees and administration costs deducted before consumer payments) does not apply here. The specific check amount varies by consumer and is printed on each individual check.
The specific payment amount for each consumer is determined by Block, Inc. and Epiq based on the consumer's individual account history. No 1099 will be issued. The total fund size and per-consumer calculation methodology have not been publicly disclosed.
