What happened
This settlement is part of In re: ZF-TRW Airbag Control Units Products Liability Litigation, a multidistrict litigation in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. The lawsuit claims that certain Hyundai and Kia vehicles contain ZF-TRW airbag control units (ACUs) that are vulnerable to electrical overstress, which may cause airbags and other safety features to fail during a collision.
Hyundai, Kia, and the related Mobis companies deny the allegations, and the Court has not decided who is right. The Court granted final approval of the settlement on October 8, 2025. In addition to cash benefits, the settlement includes a 10-year New Parts Warranty for Recalled Vehicles, an inspection program for certain crashes, and a recall outreach program. The release does not cover personal injury, wrongful death, or physical property damage claims.
How to file a claim
-
1. Confirm your vehicle is covered
Check whether your vehicle is a Recalled Vehicle or an Unrecalled Vehicle using the VIN lookup on the settlement website. You must have owned or leased the vehicle on or before April 14, 2025.
-
2. Gather any recall expenses
Owners and lessees of Recalled Vehicles can seek reimbursement of reasonable out-of-pocket costs tied to the recall, such as rental cars, towing, childcare, unreimbursed ACU repairs, and lost wages, with a receipt, invoice, or signed affidavit. All Class Members who file a claim may also receive a residual payment of up to $350 for a Recalled Vehicle or up to $150 for an Unrecalled Vehicle, paid per capita after reimbursement claims.

Where the money is going
The settlement is valued at $62,100,100 in payments and credits. That amount covers out-of-pocket reimbursements, residual payments, a recall Outreach Program, a credit for future loaner, rental, and outreach benefits, attorneys' fees and costs, and service awards. Leftover funds that cannot feasibly be distributed go to cy pres recipients, subject to Court approval.
The available amount above is our own estimate and may not match how the Settlement Agreement allocates the fund. Unspent Outreach Program funds go to the Settlement Fund. Residual payments are capped at $350 per Recalled Vehicle and $150 per Unrecalled Vehicle, are paid per capita, and depend on the number of claims.
Common questions
How much money will I receive?
It depends on your vehicle and expenses. Recalled Vehicle owners and lessees may be reimbursed for reasonable recall-related out-of-pocket costs. Every Class Member who files a claim may also receive a residual payment of up to $350 for a Recalled Vehicle or up to $150 for an Unrecalled Vehicle, paid per capita after reimbursement claims, so the final amount is not guaranteed.
Do I need to submit proof of purchase?
Not for the residual payment. Reimbursement claims for out-of-pocket expenses need a receipt or invoice, or a signed affidavit if no receipt is available.
What if I didn’t receive a notice?
You can still file if your vehicle is covered. Use the VIN lookup and get more information from the settlement website directly at ACUSettlement.com/hyundaikia, or call 1-866-287-0740.
Does staying in the class affect my right to sue later?
Yes. Class Members who did not opt out by August 25, 2025 release the Settling Defendants from the claims in the lawsuit, whether or not they file a claim. The release does not cover claims for personal injury, wrongful death, or actual physical property damage.
When will payments be sent out?
The Court granted final approval on October 8, 2025. Payments are issued after the Effective Date, which depends on any appeals, and residual payments are calculated after the April 8, 2027 claim deadline. Check ACUSettlement.com/hyundaikia for updates.
