Navy Federal Unauthorized Personal Loans Class Action Settlement

Navy Federal Credit Union has agreed to settle a class action over personal loans that third parties allegedly opened in members' names by impersonating Navy Federal personnel. About 1,500 members who received a disputed personal loan between January 1, 2023 and January 31, 2025 will automatically have the loan canceled, receive reimbursement of payments they made on it, and have Navy Federal request deletion of the related credit reporting. Do you qualify?

You are a Class Member if ALL of the following apply:

  • You were a Navy Federal member and, between January 1, 2023 and January 31, 2025, were provided a personal loan whose application was submitted from a device (such as a phone or computer) that was not familiar to Navy Federal.
  • Navy Federal deposited the loan funds into your account, you submitted a claim to Navy Federal disputing the loan as fraudulent, and Navy Federal denied your claim in whole or in part.
  • Navy Federal has not recovered the personal loan funds in full.
  • Settlement Class Members were identified from Navy Federal's records, and the parties estimate the class includes about 1,500 members. If you received a notice with a Notice ID and PIN, you are likely a Settlement Class Member.
  • Excluded: Anyone who submits a timely request for exclusion by November 9, 2026.

What happened

Plaintiffs Stacy Edey, Kellie High, and Ronnice Lee filed this proposed class action against Navy Federal Credit Union in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. According to the Settlement documents, third parties fraudulently opened personal loan accounts in members' names and impersonated Navy Federal personnel to get members to transfer the loan proceeds. The lawsuit alleges that Navy Federal failed to prevent or cancel these loans after members disputed them as fraudulent.

Navy Federal denies the allegations and denies any wrongdoing, and the Settlement is not an admission of liability. The Court has not decided who is right or wrong. The parties agreed to settle to avoid the cost, risk, and time of continued litigation. The Settlement covers Navy Federal members who received an eligible disputed personal loan between January 1, 2023 and January 31, 2025.

How to file a claim

  • 1. Confirm you are eligible

You qualify if, as a Navy Federal member, you were provided a personal loan between January 1, 2023 and January 31, 2025 that was applied for from a device Navy Federal did not recognize, you disputed it as fraudulent, Navy Federal denied your dispute in whole or in part, and Navy Federal has not recovered the loan funds in full. Class members were identified from Navy Federal's records and mailed a notice.

  • 2. Know your benefits

Your eligible loan will be canceled, payments you made on it will be reimbursed (the amount is shown on your individual notice), and Navy Federal will request deletion of the related credit reporting. These benefits are automatic. You can also receive an additional $250 payment, but only if you submit a Claim Form. Attorneys' fees and service awards are paid separately and do not reduce your benefits.

  • 3. File your Claim Form for $250

Submit the Claim Form online at NFCULoanSettlement.com using the Notice ID and PIN printed on your notice, or mail the Claim Form on the last page of your notice, postmarked by November 29, 2026, to: Edey v NFCU, c/o Settlement Administrator, PO Box 23668, Jacksonville, FL 32241. You must complete the form and sign it. No other documents are required.

  • 4. Receive your payment

If the Court grants final approval, loan cancellations and credit deletion requests are processed within 15 days, and reimbursements are paid within 30 days after the Settlement becomes final. Payments are deposited into your Navy Federal account, or mailed by check to your last known address if you no longer have an account. The $250 payment is made the same way. If anyone appeals, payments may be delayed.

Where the money is going

This Settlement does not create a common fund. Navy Federal provides the loan relief and payments directly, and it pays attorneys' fees, service awards, and administration costs separately, so those amounts do not reduce what class members receive.

Reimbursement of payments made on the loan Amount on your notice
Credit reporting deletion request Automatic
Additional cash payment with Claim Form $250
Attorneys' fees & costs (paid separately) Up to $250,000

Common questions

How much money will I receive?

Every Settlement Class Member's eligible personal loan is canceled, payments made on the loan are reimbursed (the amount appears on your individual notice), and Navy Federal requests deletion of the related credit reporting. Class members who submit a timely Claim Form also receive an additional $250. Attorneys' fees (up to $250,000) and service awards (up to $15,000 per Named Plaintiff) are paid separately by Navy Federal.

Do I need to submit proof of purchase?

No. To receive the additional $250, you complete the Claim Form, sign it, and submit it by November 29, 2026. The Settlement documents do not require any other documentation. The loan cancellation, reimbursement, and credit deletion request are automatic.

What if I didn’t receive a notice?

Settlement Class Members were identified from Navy Federal's records and mailed a notice with a Notice ID and PIN, which you need to file online. The Settlement documents do not describe a process for people who did not receive a notice. If you believe you qualify but did not get a notice, write to Edey v NFCU, c/o Settlement Administrator, PO Box 23668, Jacksonville, FL 32241, or use the contact options at NFCULoanSettlement.com.

Does staying in the class affect my right to sue later?

Yes. Unless you request exclusion by November 9, 2026, you give up the right to sue Navy Federal over its conduct relating to the personal loan covered by the Settlement. Claims under 15 U.S.C. § 1681s-2(b) of the Fair Credit Reporting Act are not released. The full release is in the Settlement Agreement on the Documents page of NFCULoanSettlement.com.

When will payments be sent out?

If the Court grants final approval at the December 9, 2026 hearing, loan cancellations and credit deletion requests are processed within 15 days and reimbursements are paid within 30 days after the Settlement becomes final. Money is deposited into your Navy Federal account, or mailed by check if you no longer have one. Appeals can delay payment.
