Shimano Crankset Class Action Settlement

Shimano, Specialized, Trek, and Giant reached a class action settlement of In re Shimano Crankset Litigation over allegations that Shimano Hollowtech II cranksets manufactured before July 2019 (Ultegra FC-6800/FC-R8000 and Dura-Ace FC-9000/R9100/FC-R9100-P with specified production codes) were prone to bonding separation and delamination and that the September 2023 Voluntary Recall was inadequate. On February 2, 2026, the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California granted final approval of the Settlement. The Settlement extends Shimano's Express Warranty for these cranksets through July 29, 2027 (bonding separation and delamination coverage), enhances Recall Retailer inspections, and reimburses documented out-of-pocket costs for class members who replaced a delaminated or separated Designated Crankset before September 21, 2023 while the Express Warranty was already expired. Defendants deny any wrongdoing or liability. The claim deadline for reimbursement is August 4, 2026.

Do you qualify?

You are a Class Member if ALL of the following apply:

  • All persons in the United States who purchased, received, were given, and/or owned a Shimano Designated Crankset, including persons who owned a bicycle equipped with a Designated Crankset, other than solely for resale.
  • Designated Cranksets are Shimano cranksets manufactured before July 2019: Ultegra FC-6800, Ultegra FC-R8000, Dura-Ace FC-9000, Dura-Ace FC-R9100, and Dura-Ace FC-R9100-P, with two-letter production codes KF, KG, KH, KI, KJ, KK, KL, LA-LL, MA-ML, NA-NL, OA-OL, PA-PL, QA-QL, or RA through RF (full list and production-code location photos at the CPSC recall page and on the settlement website).
  • All Settlement Class Members automatically receive the Extended Express Warranty (through July 29, 2027 for bonding separation and delamination coverage) and access to Enhanced Inspections at any U.S. Shimano Recall Retailer; no claim form is required for these benefits.
  • Reimbursement of out-of-pocket replacement and installation costs requires that the Designated Crankset was replaced because it separated, delaminated, or exhibited evidence of delamination, that the replacement happened before September 21, 2023, and that the Express Warranty had already expired at the time of replacement (two years from original retail purchase for Ultegra FC-6800/FC-R8000; three years for Dura-Ace FC-9000, R9100, and FC-R9100-P).
  • Excluded: The judge presiding over the lawsuit, that judge's court staff, that judge's immediate family members, and persons who validly excluded themselves from the Settlement Class by December 29, 2025.

What happened

Plaintiffs filed this consolidated class action against Shimano North America Bicycle, Inc., Shimano North America Holding, Inc., Specialized Bicycle Components, Inc., Trek Bicycle Corporation, and Giant Bicycle, Inc. on behalf of U.S. consumers who purchased, received, or owned Shimano Hollowtech II cranksets, alleging breaches of warranties and challenging the advertising and marketing of Defendants' products and the alleged inadequacy of Shimano's September 2023 Voluntary Recall. There are no allegations that any plaintiff suffered a physical injury from the cranksets.

Defendants deny the allegations and deny any wrongdoing or liability, and the Court has not made any determination that any law was violated. The parties agreed to settle to avoid the cost, risk, and time of continued litigation. On February 2, 2026, the Court granted final approval of the Settlement, which extends Shimano's Express Warranty for Designated Cranksets through July 29, 2027 for bonding separation and delamination coverage, enhances inspections at authorized Recall Retailers, and reimburses documented out-of-pocket costs for class members who replaced a delaminated or separated Designated Crankset before the recall and while the original Express Warranty was already expired.

How to file a claim

  • 1

Confirm your crankset is a Designated Crankset

Check whether your Shimano crankset is one of the covered models (Ultegra FC-6800, Ultegra FC-R8000, Dura-Ace FC-9000, Dura-Ace FC-R9100, or Dura-Ace FC-R9100-P) and whether the two-letter production code falls within the listed range (KF through RF). Where the money is going

This is a reimbursement-based settlement, not a common-fund class action. There is no settlement fund pool. Settlement Class Members automatically receive the Extended Express Warranty (through July 29, 2027 for bonding separation and delamination coverage) and access to Enhanced Inspections at Recall Retailers; documented out-of-pocket replacement and installation costs are reimbursed on a per-claim basis. Attorneys' fees, expenses, and Service Awards are paid separately by Defendants and do not reduce any class member's recovery.

Reimbursement of out-of-pocket replacement and installation costs Documented costs
Extended Express Warranty (automatic, no claim form) Through July 29, 2027
Enhanced inspections at Recall Retailers (automatic) Free
Attorneys' fees and expenses (paid separately by Defendants) Set by Court

Common questions

How much money will I receive?

Reimbursement equals your reasonable, documented out-of-pocket costs for a qualifying crankset replacement and installation. There is no fixed cap stated in the public Notice. Reimbursement is only available if (a) the Designated Crankset was replaced before September 21, 2023 and (b) the Express Warranty had already expired at the time of replacement (two years from original retail purchase for Ultegra FC-6800/FC-R8000; three years for Dura-Ace FC-9000, R9100, and FC-R9100-P). The Extended Warranty and Enhanced Inspections benefits are provided automatically to all Class Members at no cost.

Do I need to submit proof of purchase?

Yes, for the reimbursement claim. To receive reimbursement of replacement and installation costs, you must submit a Claim Form with supporting documentation of the costs you paid (such as receipts, invoices, or repair records). The Settlement Administrator's mailing address for paper claims is P.O. Box 4150, Portland, OR 97208-4150. No documentation is required for the automatic Extended Warranty or Enhanced Inspections benefits.

What if I didn’t receive a notice?

You can still file a Claim Form for reimbursement even if you did not receive a direct notice. If you owned, received, or were given a Designated Crankset (or a bicycle equipped with one) in the United States, you are likely a Settlement Class Member. For help confirming your eligibility, visit ShimanoCranksetSettlement.com or call the Settlement Administrator toll-free at 1-888-873-3150.

Does staying in the class affect my right to sue later?

Yes. The opt-out window has already closed (December 29, 2025), and the Court granted final approval of the Settlement on February 2, 2026. Unless you validly excluded yourself by the December 29, 2025 deadline, you are bound by the Settlement and have released the legal claims at issue in this lawsuit against Shimano, Specialized, Trek, Giant, and the other Released Persons. The full release language is in Sections 2 and 5 of the Settlement Agreement, available at ShimanoCranksetSettlement.com. If you remain in the Settlement, you may still file a Claim Form for reimbursement of qualifying costs.

When will payments be sent out?

The Court granted final approval of the Settlement on February 2, 2026. Reimbursement payments are issued by the Settlement Administrator after the Settlement becomes final, which generally means after any appeals are resolved. The appeal process can take a year or more. The Extended Warranty and Enhanced Inspections benefits also begin once the Settlement becomes final. No follow-up is required after a valid Claim Form with documentation is submitted.
