What happened

This lawsuit, Lawrence v. Blue Ridge Rural Water Company, Inc., claims that Blue Ridge failed to adequately protect personal information in a July 2024 targeted cyberattack on its systems. Files that may have been accessed included names, Social Security numbers, and direct deposit account numbers. The case is pending in the South Carolina Court of Common Pleas for Greenville County, and the Class Representative is Jeffrey Lawrence.

Blue Ridge denies that it did anything wrong, and the Court has not decided who is right. The parties agreed to settle the case to avoid the costs, risks, and uncertainty of continued litigation.

Where the money is going

The settlement website does not state a total settlement fund. Blue Ridge will pay approved claims for documented losses and the alternative cash payment, plus credit monitoring. Blue Ridge will separately pay Class Counsel's attorneys' fees and costs and a service award for the Class Representative, subject to Court approval. The website does not describe any pro rata adjustment.

Ordinary Out-of-Pocket Losses, per claimant Up to $500
Extraordinary Out-of-Pocket Losses, per claimant Up to $2,500
Alternative Cash Payment, per claimant $50
Credit monitoring 2 years
Attorneys' fees and costs (requested, paid by Blue Ridge) $225,000

Fees, costs, and the service award are subject to Court approval at the February 22, 2027 Final Approval Hearing, and the Court may award less. Losses must not already have been reimbursed by a third party, and self-prepared notes alone are not sufficient documentation.
