What happened
Matthew Quinn, a former lease driver, sued Meadow Lark and related defendants in the U.S. District Court for the District of Montana. The lawsuit alleged that Meadow Lark Agency improperly and systematically deducted pay from drivers who leased trucks and failed to comply with federal law concerning leases. Meadow Lark later ceased operations and filed for bankruptcy.
Officers Amanda Roth and Mike Kandas deny the allegations, and the Court has not decided who is right on the merits. Two settlements were reached to avoid the cost, risk, and delay of continued litigation: one funded by the Meadow Lark Agency directors and officers insurance policy, and one funded by the professional liability policy of Meadow Lark's former attorney Ron Usem and his law firm. The Court entered a final order approving the settlements on September 14, 2026.
How to file a claim
-
1. Confirm you are a Class Member
If you leased a truck and drove under Meadow Lark's DOT authority after March 28, 2019, and deductions were taken from your pay, you are likely a Class Member. Notices were mailed using addresses from Meadow Lark's records. If you are unsure, call Class Counsel at (406) 442-3261.
-
2. Understand how your payment is calculated
Payments are allocated pro rata by your contract term using a uniform daily rate. The notice estimates about $6.50 for each day you drove with Meadow Lark, or about $2,372.50 for a full year. The Court's findings project an average payment of about $1,290, with the longest-tenured driver receiving more than $10,000. These are estimates, not guarantees, and you are responsible for any taxes.

Where the money is going
The combined Settlement Fund is approximately $1.37 million: $1.12 million from the Meadow Lark Agency directors and officers policy and $250,000 from the Usem Defendants' professional liability policy. Attorneys' fees, litigation expenses, the service award, administrative expenses, and a $100,000 set-aside for Roth and Kandas are deducted, and approximately $711,670 is projected for Class Members. Any unused portion of the set-aside reverts to the class, and uncashed checks go to Court-approved charities.
All amounts listed above are pending and subject to final court approval as reflected in the Court's final order. The attorneys' fee figure is our estimate of 33.33% of the approximate fund. The projected distribution is the figure stated in the Court's Findings and Recommendations; individual payments depend on how long each driver was with Meadow Lark.
