What happened
Plaintiff Brian Keim sued Trader Joe's Company in Keim v. Trader Joe's, alleging that the chain printed point-of-sale receipts at some of its stores displaying the first six and last four digits of customers' credit or debit card numbers. Under the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACTA), merchants may not print more than the last five digits of a card number on an electronically generated receipt.
Trader Joe's denies any wrongdoing, notes that the practice affected only some stores and only a small minority of transactions in those stores, and represents that no one has reported identity theft based on the alleged conduct. Trader Joe's insurer agreed to settle for $7.4 million to avoid further litigation. The Court has not ruled on the merits of the claims.

Common questions
How much will I actually receive?
Plaintiff estimates a pro rata payment of approximately $102.45 per valid claim, but the exact amount depends on how many valid claim forms are submitted. There is no minimum payout guaranteed.
Do I need my old receipt to file a claim?
No. You do not need to produce a receipt to submit a claim. However, the Settlement Administrator may contact you to verify your claim and may request additional information.
Do I need to prove I was harmed or suffered identity theft?
No. Identity theft is not required to file a FACTA claim. You can submit a claim even if you have never experienced any fraud as a result of the receipt.
What if I am not sure whether I am a class member?
Not every Trader Joe's store printed receipts with the first six and last four digits of the card number, and even in affected stores only some transactions were affected. If you are unsure, you can call the Settlement Administrator at 1-888-444-7415 or write to the administrator's P.O. Box.
Does filing a claim affect my right to sue Trader Joe's later?
Yes. If you submit a claim, you release your claims against Trader Joe's and related parties for the conduct in this lawsuit. To preserve your right to sue, you must instead mail a written exclusion request postmarked by June 9, 2026.
When will payments be sent out?
Trader Joe's must fund the settlement within 10 business days after the Court's final approval. Payments to claimants follow after that, though appeals could extend the timeline.
