What happened
Plaintiffs filed this class action alleging that PowerSchool Holdings LLC, Hobsons, Inc., Heap Inc., and the Chicago Board of Education non-consensually intercepted students' confidential and sensitive communications while they used the Naviance college and career planning platform. The complaint alleges violations of the Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA), the California Invasion of Privacy Act (CIPA), the Illinois Eavesdropping Act (IEA), the Stored Communications Act (SCA), the Illinois School Student Records Act (ISSRA), and common law, based on the alleged integration of third-party analytics and advertising technologies into the Naviance Platform without student or parental consent.
PowerSchool Holdings, Hobsons, Heap, and CPS deny any wrongdoing and deny that they violated any law. The parties agreed to settle to avoid the costs and uncertainties of continued litigation. In addition to the $17,250,000 cash fund, the settlement requires PowerSchool to create a Web Governance Committee to assess third-party analytics use on Naviance, restrict third-party tracking tools for two years, update privacy disclosures, and instruct vendors including Heap, Google, and Microsoft to delete student data. CPS also agreed to strengthen data-protection provisions in contracts with third-party vendors for four years.

Where the money is going
This is a non-reversionary common fund of $17,250,000. Attorneys' fees (Class Counsel may request no more than 37% of the fund, net of administration costs and the service award), a service award to the Class Representative (up to $5,000), and notice and administration expenses are all paid from this fund before class member payments are calculated.
All amounts listed above are pending and subject to final court approval at the August 19, 2026 Final Approval Hearing. The Court may award less than the amounts requested by Class Counsel. Each valid claim receives a pro rata (equal) share of the net fund; actual per-person payments depend entirely on how many valid claims are filed and on the amounts awarded by the Court for fees and costs.
Common questions
How much money will I receive?
There is no fixed per-person maximum. Each Settlement Class Member who submits a valid Claim Form will receive a pro rata (equal) share of whatever remains in the $17,250,000 Settlement Fund after attorneys' fees, the service award, and notice and administration costs are paid. The more valid claims filed, the smaller each individual payment will be. You can call the Settlement Administrator at (833) 447-8852 to ask how many claims have been filed so far.
Do I need to submit proof of purchase?
No documentation is required to submit a Claim Form. You simply certify under penalty of perjury that you are a Settlement Class Member who logged into the Naviance Platform at least once during the Class Period. If you are filing on behalf of a minor, you must be their parent or legal guardian and sign the form on their behalf. File online at PowerSchoolNavianceSettlement.com or by mail by July 27, 2026.
What if I didn’t receive a notice?
Yes. You can still file a Claim Form even if you did not receive a direct notice, as long as you meet the eligibility requirements. Notice was distributed by mail and email to students and parents identified in school records. If you or your child logged into Naviance between August 18, 2021 and January 23, 2026, you are likely eligible. Submit your claim at PowerSchoolNavianceSettlement.com by July 27, 2026.
Does staying in the class affect my right to sue later?
Yes. Unless you exclude yourself by mailing a written, signed exclusion request postmarked no later than July 13, 2026, you will be bound by the Settlement and will release the legal claims at issue in this lawsuit against PowerSchool Holdings, Hobsons, Heap, CPS, and their affiliates. That means you cannot separately sue those parties for the claims resolved here, whether or not you file a claim. The full release is in the Settlement Agreement at PowerSchoolNavianceSettlement.com. To opt out, mail your request to: Q.J. v. PowerSchool Holdings LLC, c/o Kroll Settlement Administration LLC, PO Box 225391, New York, NY 10150-5391, postmarked by July 13, 2026.
When will payments be sent out?
The Court will hold the Final Approval Hearing on August 19, 2026 at 11 a.m. Central Time before Judge Jorge L. Alonso in Chicago. Payments will be issued approximately 45 days after the Court grants final approval and any appeals are resolved. The appeals process can take a year or more. Once you file a valid claim, no further action is required; check PowerSchoolNavianceSettlement.com for status updates.
